Musical Instruments

In order to make music, people need instruments. This exhibition shows how they are manufactured, how they work and which experiments and sophistry were required to reach today's standards.

The manufacture of musical instruments, particularly pianos, was a significant branch of industry in Vienna in the 19th century. This is also the reason why the instruments are shown in the Technisches Museum Wien (Vienna Technical Museum) (which was also a museum of craft and industry).

As people also want to hear musical instruments, many examples are offered as sound and film recordings. The exhibition additionally shows a series of musical automata, which can be operated during special guided tours. For some years now, the collection has concentrated on electronic musical instruments, which have significantly changed current music production. Thus the subject of "Synthesizers", for example, has been given its own section of the exhibition.
