ORF Long Night of Museums 2023

SPECIAL PROGRAMME: DRONES

Experience drones and their possible uses live and become a drone pilot yourself! As in previous years, the Technisches Museum Wien (Vienna Museum of Science and Technology) is taking part in the ORF Long Night of Museums, inviting visitors to turn night into day with an extensive programme on Saturday, 7 October 2023, between 6.00 pm and 1.00 am.

This year’s Long Night is dedicated to drones. Spanning an area of 22,000 square metres, visitors can dive into the world of technology: Interactive VR experiences, flying sparks, exciting tours and thrilling demonstrations invite you to soar to new heights!


Programme:


Drone flight training with visitors – 6.00 pm to 12.30 am, level 2
Fly camera drones with professional guidance by ÖAMTC driving technique instructors across a spectacular obstacle course consisting of thousands of sustainable building blocks constructed by the master builders of Bioblo. Drones will be provided by Globe Flight

Drone flight spectacle in the museum – 6.30, 7.30, 8.30, 9.30, 10.30 & 11.30 pm, level 2, central hall
Pilots of Vienna FPV and Butterschiff transmit first-person-view drone flights through the museum live to a screen in the central hall of the Technisches Museum Wien, allowing visitors to experience unique panoramic views live on a big screen.
Duration of the sightseeing flights about 3–4 min.


Experiencing drones in action – 7.00, 8.00, 9.00 & 10.00 pm, level 2, central hall
Emergency organisations show how drones can help save lives. At 7.00 and 9.00 pm, the ÖAMTC air rescue service presents the “Medical Drone Services” project for the transport of high-priority medical cargo, and at 8.00 and 10.00 pm, Johanniter demonstrates how drones can be used for assessing situations and locating missing people.
The short presentations are each about 15 minutes long.


Discover the latest drone technology – 6.00 pm to 12.30 am, level 2
The partners of the Technisches Museum Wien (ÖAMTC, Johanniter, Vienna FPV, ButterschiffGlobe Flight and Drones | FPV Team of the Austrian Aeroclub) present various drones and their possible uses as well as current research projects and training opportunities at their information stands. Those who are interested can also learn more here about how to get a drone licence.


Birdly – the VR Flight – 6.30 to 11.00 pm, level 1
Birdly® offers visitors an immersive virtual reality experience of flying like a bird and discovering fantastic views. To create an even more vivid full-body experience, users can control the flight themselves by moving their arms and can even feel the wind in their face.
Tickets for the VR experience are available at the ticket counter (€ 3.90).


High-voltage demonstration – 6:45 to 11:45 pm, level 2
This stunning show whisks you away to the world of electrical charges and currents! We generate current with extremely high voltage to conduct astonishing experiments: Light bulbs are glowing without using a power cable and metre-long bolts of lightning are flashing freely across our safety cage.
The show starts every 60 min. Duration about 15 min. Free tickets are available at the ticket counter 2 hours before the show start. 


Introductory tour “Take to the skies” – 7.15, 9.15 & 11.15 pm, meeting point on level 2
This tour explores how hot air balloons, airships, airplanes or helicopters fly.
Duration about 15 min. No tickets needed. The tour will be held in German.


Introductory tour “Energy transition” – 8.15, 10.15 pm & 12.15 am, meeting point on level 2
Global warming and the energy crisis make a transition to sustainable energy more urgent than ever before. How can we accomplish the energy transition? What innovations can help us do so and how can we all contribute to achieving this goal in our daily lives? Immerse yourself in the current special exhibition “Energy transition. A race against time”.
Duration about 15 min. No tickets needed. The tour will be held in German.


Family area miniXplore – 6.00 to 10.00 pm, level 3
The interactive exhibition for families with children aged 3–8 years stimulates the joy of experimentation and activity, because the versatile and artistic adventure playground holds numerous stations in store for curious explorers!
The children’s area is open at all times. No slot reservations are needed.


Maker*Space techLab – 6.00 to 10.00 pm, level 3
In the techLAB of the Technisches Museum Wien, those who are interested can implement small projects independently and at their own pace using technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters or cutting plotters. Competent explainers help visitors quickly familiarise themselves with the makerspace, learn the handling of its equipment and swiftly acquire the necessary digital skills.
