How we know what we know

How does science work? What methods, equipment or data form the basis for creating new knowledge? What does the work of scientists actually involve? On this guided tour, we explore the world of research through examples from physics, astronomy and brain research.

Guided Tour
In the exhibition “Changing Science”, we learn from selected examples across various disciplines how new discoveries arise and what impact they have: how research into electricity helps prevent accidents, how modern optical and measuring instruments are changing our view of celestial bodies, or how the study of the human brain provides new insights for health. The question of who is able or permitted to conduct research, and under what conditions, is also addressed using X-ray research as an example. Furthermore, it becomes clear what new fields of application are being opened up by quantum physics. The exhibition shows how science creates knowledge: from the discovery of phenomena through initial attempts at explanation and systematic investigations to established knowledge. In doing so, science not only provides explanations, it also generates something new – new ideas, models, methods and technologies.
