Down the mine

Hidden underneath the Technisches Museum Wien (Vienna Museum of Science and Technology) is the popular historical display mine “Gabrielenzeche”. This online tour gives you and your class the opportunity to experience the coal mine digitally from a distance!
Kindergartens & Schools
6.–13. Grade (11–19 years)
The virtual tour of the Gabrielenzeche provides insights into hard work underground. Two of our “miners” take the pupils from the adits and shafts of the early 20th century to the last years of coal mining in Austria. In addition to covering daily work routine, mineworkers’ slang and dangers of mining, this online tour also shows historical machines in action! “Good luck!” or “Glück auf!”, as German-speaking miners say, to all who virtually “enter the mountain” on this tour!
