To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the railway, the TMW is presenting a special exhibition for the whole family, showcasing impressive historical models from the museum’s collection. The exhibition offers visitors a behind-the-scenes look at rail transport, shedding light on the complex processes that often remain hidden from passengers.
Intricately crafted and technically sophisticated railway models trace the development of the first public mass transport system from its steam-powered origins to the high-speed trains of today. The special exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the railway from different historical perspectives, and also explains why we say things are “on track” and why we sometimes find ourselves “running on two tracks”.
Created in collaboration with the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), the anniversary exhibition Under the Spell of the Railway: 200 Years of Rail Travel explores the economic and social changes set in motion by the advent of the railway – from the emergence of tourism and the revolution in food supply chains to the acceleration of communication through postal services.
The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated book entitled Magie auf Schienen. Eisenbahnmodelle erzählen ihre Geschichte (Magic on Rails. Railway Models Tell Their Story), which features many fascinating close-up photographs and in-depth insights into the origins of the models on display.
