This form of energy can be used for an incredibly broad range of different applications. Every day we take it for granted that we can recharge our smartphones, heat or cool our homes and turn on the lights whenever it gets dark. Without electricity, our everyday lives would change fundamentally.
Across an exhibition space of 500 m², the interactive exhibition entitled “ON/OFF” addresses the key questions surrounding the present and future of the Austrian electricity grid. Where does our electricity come from? What role do renewable energy sources such as wind power or photovoltaics play? Why does Austria not generate electricity from nuclear power?
Featuring nine sections, the exhibition explains the pathways of electricity from power plants to those who ultimately “consume” it in an easy-to-understand way. The individual themed sections of the exhibition interconnect to create a symbolic electricity grid that can be monitored and regulated from a control centre. In the so-called load distribution game, you will be presented with the challenge of maintaining the flow of power in the exhibition’s electricity grid.
Numerous additional hands-on exhibits enable you to experience the functional principles of various technologies. Experiment with the multitude of possible and future storage technologies or witness up close the efficiency of different wind turbines in the wind tunnel.
But the exhibition also shows that there are still many unanswered questions surrounding the topic of energy. What technologies will we use in the future? Can technological progress be reconciled with an eco-friendly lifestyle? And when will we be able to answer all these questions?
