How does radio work? Who makes radio today and who shaped radio 100 years ago? What was broadcast and who listens/listened to it? Will there still be radio in the future? These questions will be discussed in this dialogue-based tour about the development and use of an auditory technology in the context of social change in Austria.

Guided Tour

For over 100 years, radio as a broadcasting medium has been an integral part of social communication. What began as an experiment by radio hobbyists has developed into a diverse, worldwide radio landscape. In the course of its 100-year history as the oldest electronic mass medium, radio has undergone a technological transformation and a process of democratisation: from a propaganda tool of state broadcasting corporations to private stations and “independent local radio”. Today, the Internet, social media and podcast formats as transmission and storage platforms enable the constant availability of audio content for radio producers, journalists and listeners.

The tour of the exhibition 100 years of radio. As Austria went on air conveys the history of classic radio, showcases technical and transformation processes in society and explores current and future developments of the medium of radio.
