The items that accompany us every day are the result of a process that begins somewhere entirely different. To help us understand clothing textiles, this special exhibition breaks them down into their constituent parts: fibres, yarns and fabrics. These determine the – sometimes fundamentally different – functions that garments will later fulfil.
Where textile components come from and how they are processed usually remains hidden from view in everyday life. The TMW sheds light on the complex processes of the textile industry and displays historical exhibits from the Imperial and Royal Factory Products Cabinet and the museum’s Commodity Science Collection alongside contemporary garments. Where do they come from? What characteristics do they share? Why were they reused at the end of their useful life in the 19th century? How do we address the challenges of overproduction and textile waste?
Drawing on classical theatrical dramaturgy, this special exhibition, presented in three acts, addresses fundamental questions about clothing textiles, explores the production process in depth, provides space to reflect on individual use, examines their socio-economic and historical significance, and discusses what happens to them when they are no longer in use. In this special exhibition, current research, historical objects and sophisticated everyday textiles intertwine to form an overall perspective that shifts the focus from the details to the bigger picture and looks ahead to the future.

“tec/xtile” is part of the international cooperation #Alliance4Science. Conceived by the TMW, this special exhibition will also be presented at the DASA Working World Exhibition (Dortmund) and the Parque de las Ciencias (Granada) as part of this international collaboration between European science and technology museums. The aim of the initiative is to foster the exchange of different perspectives and to establish sustainable museum practices.
