The collection activity of the Technisches Museum Wien (Vienna Museum of Science and Technology) has so far been limited to collecting cultural assets in tangible form. In 2022, a new main research and collection area was established at the Technisches Museum Wien – the Software Collection.
The goal is to collect, preserve and communicate born-digital objects and software for already existing hardware in the collection. The specific characteristics of software technologies require complex, experimental and innovative solutions.

Central issues include developing an internationally coordinated collection strategy, exploring and testing solutions for the long-term preservation of digital culture, increased networking with national and international partners, establishing the technical infrastructure, expanding the collection with the participation of visitors and online users as well as developing suitable formats for the best possible communication and use of the new collection.

As an Austrian federal museum, we place a focus on software technologies developed in Austria or on digital objects that are relevant to users living in Austria in various contexts. In terms of technology, the new collection will distinguish itself by an experimental, innovative and interactive design. As an Austrian federal museum, we place a focus on software technologies developed in Austria or on digital objects that are relevant to users living in Austria in various contexts. In terms of technology, the new collection will distinguish itself by an experimental, innovative and interactive design. In terms of content, the Software Collection will be characterised by a critical, socio-politically relevant and participatory approach within a clearly defined subject area between innovation, sustainability, diversity and gender. Following the museum’s open-source approach, the Software Collection and its technical tools are intended to be non-commercial and, whenever possible, operate with open technologies (open source).
