Mag. Bernhard Schmidt

Head of Team, Energy & Mining

With the Vienna Technical Museum since:

From September 2008 to August 2010 as Museum Educator; since September 2012 as Head of Division

My duties include:

Together with my colleague Dietmar Linzbacher I look after the Energy & Mining collection section and in particular the Mining and Electrical Engineering collection group as well as the Electro-Pathological Museum’s special collection.

  • Expanding, developing, documenting and providing scientific support for the collection groups
  • Curating exhibitions
  • Publications
  • Curator’s guided tours
  • International contacts and conference attendances
  • Organising and co-ordinating energy debates

My key areas of research:

As a natural scientist I am interested in environmental aspects and sustainability in energy supply, distribution and efficiency.

My recommendation for you:

The Ruetz power plant is impressive proof of how hydroelectric power was already being used more than 100 years ago as a renewable energy source to power the Mittenwald Railway with electricity.
Likewise the model of the Retz windmill shows that clean wind power has long been put to good sensible use in our part of the world.

Admittedly, many of these solutions would struggle to cope with today’s demands, which is why I would highly recommend our energy debates, which are held on our premises four times a year. Topical issues from the energy sector are presented and discussed, with the lectures given by experts in the field subsequently available for download from our website.
