Dr. Helmut Lackner

Deputy to the Chief Executive Officer

With the Vienna Technical Museum since:

Oktober 1991

My duties include:

After working on the redesign of the Museum and its inauguration in 1999 I was head of the Scientific Services Department for several years and, from 2005 to 2011, the Collections Department. My principal duties include:

  • Stock-take Project
  • “Motorsport in Austria” project
  • Curating exhibitions
  • Publications
  • Provenance research
  • History of the Museum
  • Member of the Board of the Gesellschaft für Technikgeschichte e.V. (Society for the History of Technology), the Museumsbund Österreich (Museum Association of Austria) and the Verein Museum Arbeitswelt (Museum for Industrial Work Environment) in Steyr

As Head of the Collections Department I am responsible for expanding the collections and co-ordinating not just the collection areas and the inventory and depot administration area, but also all of the Museum’s activities relating to its historical inventory of exhibits.
The Collections staff are happy to answer any queries you may have regarding the Museum’s collections.

Main areas of research:

My scientific work as a historian focuses on the history of industry, technology and architecture in the 19th and 20th century and the history of the Museum itself. As part of this work I have so far published 20 papers under my own name and 150 other papers jointly with others.

My recommendation for you:

If you’re interested in taking a look behind the scenes and visiting the Museum’s depot for a change, then why not register for a guided tour of the depot?
If you’re interested in the history of the Technisches Museum, I recommend the publication 100 Jahre Technisches Museum Wien (100 Years of Technisches Museum Wien), published in 2009 to mark the Museum’s centenary.
