Collection area: Traffic & Transport

This area covers rail and road transport, aviation and shipping, as well as the infrastructure group of "Bridges and Tunnels". The railway collection holds the oldest locomotives outside Great Britain. The highlights also include early automobiles, the sectioned de Havilland DH 104 "Dove" aircraft (1957), and models of Österreichischer Lloyd and of oared and powered shipping on the Danube. The Transport collection concentrates on the first half of the 20th century, with a focus on Austria.

    Austria’s topography is such that the construction of railway lines is always a very complex undertaking, which is why the first tunnels were built by specialists from abroad.

    Shifting the Trisanna Bridge

    The assignment: replace a bridge in the Tyrolean Alps at a height of 88 m without interrupting rail operations. This enterprise was successfully undertaken in 1964.

    Trisanna Bridge junction

    The construction of the Arlberg Railway posed huge challenges for engineers. The Trisanna Bridge, together with the 12.4 km Arlberg Tunnel, proved particularly demanding.
