All of the museum departments are committed to the preservation of the collections. The Conservation & Restoration Department creates and optimises suitable conditions for the preservation and care of the museum objects.

The Conservation & Restoration Department works in unison with other museum departments on the preservation of the collection, its correct storage in the depositories and appropriate display in exhibitions. The security of the objects is always paramount. A preventive conservation approach characterises the 20-year history of the Conservation & Restoration Department at the Technisches Museum Wien (Vienna Technical Museum).

The main focus is on the preservation of authenticity in historical materials and structures with due consideration given to all changes and damage accrued over time. Before an object is treated, all of the relevant data regarding its origin and history is gathered together. This information is of great importance for the decision-making process accompanying any restoration as it facilitates a deeper understanding of an historical object, its outward appearance and its technical function.

The restoration team conserves and restores objects from all of the collections. Their tasks also include installing special exhibitions with the provision of specialist object display and exhibition conditions suitable for the exhibits. The variety of materials and technologies requiring attention is extremely wide. A broad knowledge drawn from various fields of science, art, history as well as many technical fields is necessary for this work. The team consists of specialists from various conservation disciplines complementing one another in collaboration. Occasionally external experts are called upon to supplement the team.
